Our Philosophy on How to Survive in the Music Industry

New, Different, Relevant. This is our motto at BlckLbl and for good reason.

After 18+ years in the music and entertainment industry, we’ve been blessed to see the inner workings of the industry as well as the patterns that happen in it. A lot of people think that what is happening in the music industry right now is all new, but if you’ve been playing the game for a while, you know this is not the case.

Just as any business or industry, things go in cycles, seasons and when one passes, another one comes to eventually end right back to the same season you’ve experienced before. We see this as one wave of music experiences popularity (90’s) only to return 3 decades later.

Through all these changes, there are 3 things that we noticed have always stayed the same and was the determining factor of success for artists, producers, engineers, labels, and businesses in general.

  1. Be New – Let’s be real, most people are tired of seeing the same old thing. They like something new and shiny (hello America). Not to mention Doing something new makes you unpredictable and there for harder to copy. It was our main marketing technique and allowed us to build up BlckLbl Studios to be the number one rated studio in California.
  2. Be Different – One crutch that makes us cringe is when people are doing what everyone else is doing. They are afraid to be different and by default become mediocre and boring. We say do and be something no one has ever seen. By making yourself different ensures that you will stand out from the crowd and be heard above the static.
  3. Be You – Another thing we see all too often, people trying to be something other than themselves. First off, it is really easy for people to spot when someone is trying to be something they are not, and it makes them look like a joke. Second, the easiest way to be different, new, and stand out is to be yourself. It takes a lot of energy, effort, and emotional toll to try to be something you aren’t. I know this for a fact as it was my job in the entertainment industry for half of my life to do just that. Be you, attract people like you, and see how much more successful and happy you’ll be. (You can thank us for this tip later) The beautiful thing is no one else can be you like you, no matter how hard they try.

So there is our philosophy, it has guided us through a successful career in the music and entertainment industry as well as being able to do our passions as our job. This in itself is worth it and why we continue to follow it.
